Over on New York’s Greene Street, there’s a long, concrete-coated storefront serving as the latest nexus for the city’s hippest creatives. Information about just what goes on at byALEXANDER is a bit hard to come by. That's on purpose. As founder Alexander Grant notes on the company’s site, “Nothing is available online as we want all customers to visit the store.”
A digital-second, IRL-first approach is a rarity these days—but it’s working. Last night, CULTURED's Sarah Harrelson and Grant gathered guests including musician FERG, model Colin Blacksmith, artist Derek Fordjour and lawyer Alexis Hoag-Fordjour, DJ Memphy, stylist Jordan Dorso, designer Julia Watson, chef Romilly Newman, gallerist Sam Kapp, and Marian Goodman’s Junette Teng and Linda Pellegrini for a dinner prepared by artist Tavares Strachan.
For the evening, Strachan whipped up a feast of chicken and fish jerk tacos, accompanied by Hennessy cocktails and a performance by Jamaican musician Runkus. Also known by his producer moniker Alex da Kid, Grant is using his byALEXANDER fashion line (worn by the likes of 070 Shake and Gary Busey) as a launching pad for a creative community. His Soho outpost promises further workshops, apprenticeships, open mics, and salon-style dinners, of which this served as the exclusive debut.
