The image-makers on CULTURED’s fourth annual Young Photographers list were nominated because they understand something crucial. In a culture awash in images, the role of a photographer is not simply to document what they see. It’s to determine what deserves to be seen.
This year’s class of photographers approaches that task from a striking range of perspectives, turning their cameras toward family histories, insular subcultures, war zones, and private rituals. Aged 30 or under and hailing from Belfast and Ulaanbaatar to Nashville and Madrid, these 14 artists share no singular aesthetic. What unites them is a restless curiosity—and a conviction that the right shot can still reshape how we see the world.
