Like many of New York’s historic treasures, the Bloomingdale’s flagship store can be found uptown. Occupying almost an entire city block in the East 50s, the iconic department store’s building has presided over the Upper East Side and played host to the fashions of the moment since 1886.
Today, the store looks a little different than it did in the 19th century. Swaths of Issey Miyake pleats and decadent Dries Van Noten florals cycle through its revolving doors and onto the streets of Manhattan. This year, Bloomingdale’s also unveiled a newly redesigned floor, expanded its footwear selection, and added a roster of 35 new designers to meet the desires of an evolving, ever-discerning clientele.
One hundred and forty years after the store’s debut, CULTURED explored its latest wares with a visit to the Upper East Side—stopping in at the Mark Hotel with eight shopping bags, two models, and a photographer in tow.
