Last night in Chinatown, CULTURED at Home, Salon Art + Design, and William White convened an intimate gathering of design-world insiders at Will Cooper‘s New York salon for their “By Design, From the Beginning” panel, featuring Cooper, designer Andre Mellone, and CULTURED at Home Guest Editor Alexandra Cunningham-Cameron. The evening doubled as a preview of CULTURED at Home Volume II, inviting guests to reconsider the childhood memories, family influences, and formative environments that shape their own aesthetic sensibilities.
The Locale: Will Cooper’s specially-curated salon in New York served as the setting for the gathering, bringing the conversation about interiors, identity, and the art of living into a space devoted to design.
The Occasion: The gathering anticipated the release of CULTURED at Home Volume II later this week, the magazine’s second design-focused edition exploring the creative personalities and private spaces that define contemporary living. The evening brought this theme off of the collectible publication’s pages and into its larger community.
The Entertainment: Cooper led a conversation with Mellone and Cunningham-Cameron that began with a deceptively thorny question: Is taste inherited or learned? Mellone’s childhood in São Paulo, surrounded by his father’s drawings and architectural models, provided one point of departure. Cunningham-Cameron’s 2017 exhibition “Free Play” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara offered another, opening a discussion about experimentation as a way to challenge conventional ideas of beauty and utility.
Parting Gift: Guests received copies of CULTURED at Home Volume I, a taste of the editorial world set to expand with the forthcoming second edition, available for pre-order here.
Memorable Moment: The trio revealed their most dramatic design mistakes, and Mellone shared his ultimate design inspiration: the classic film 9 1/2 Weeks.
