Bal Harbour Shops selected rising talent Sophia Wilson as the recipient of its second annual Next Gen Fashion Photography Award. The 22-year-old fashion and portrait photographer made a name for herself shooting the streets and inhabitants of her East Village neighborhood in New York. She has also shot for publications including Vogue, The New York Times, and Vanity Fair, on top of campaigns for Nike, Vans, and Instagram.
Wilson was chosen by a panel of experts composed of Alessia Glaviano, head of global PhotoVogue; Isolde Brielmaier, deputy director of the New Museum; Michael Famighetti, editor of Aperture; and fashion and portrait photographer Stewart Shining. The win, which comes with a cash prize of $10,000 and a feature in Bal Harbour, was celebrated last Wednesday with an intimate luncheon at the downtown New York social club Zero Bond.
Guests—including fellow creatives Kelsey Healey, Callie Reiff, Lumia Nocito, Paul Hill, Gabrielle Richardson, and Sophie Elgort—were treated to lunch, drinks, and a flip through Bal Harbour’s latest issue. “My first award ever!!!” Wilson wrote on Instagram. “I am so totally honored and shocked to be the 2023 recipient of the [Bal Harbour Shops] $10,000 Next Gen Fashion Photography Award.”
